Steady Leadership Through Change

A Conversation with Kraken Automation’s New General Manager, Brent Harman

When you talk to Brent Harman, you immediately get a sense of balance — a steady confidence grounded in experience and a forward-looking optimism that reflects where Kraken Automation is headed. Recently appointed General Manager, Brent has been part of the Kraken team since 2008, and his journey reflects both the company’s adaptability and its enduring commitment to innovation done right.

Brent first joined Kraken 16 years ago, applying for a purchasing position. The team quickly recognized that his skills could be better used in another area. “They created a new position — Operations Manager.” Brent recalls. That moment set the tone for his years at Kraken: identifying opportunities, building new pathways, and ensuring operations run with precision and purpose.

A Team Built on Trust

Kraken has always operated as a close-knit team, something Brent values deeply. “Because we’re a smaller company, everyone interacts with one another,” he says. “There are no islands. Everyone is focused on the same goal — meeting customer requirements.” This collaborative approach is at the core of Kraken’s reliability. Challenges are met together. Decisions are made with input from across the team. And the results are evident in equipment that consistently performs to the highest standards.

Innovation Around Every Corner

One of the most exciting aspects of working in custom automation, Brent notes, is the constant variety in projects. “There’s always something new around the corner,” he explains. “It might be a completely new machine that doesn’t currently exist, a combination of technologies we’ve used before, or even a small but critical modification to meet new consumer demands.” That continuous evolution keeps Kraken’s team — and Brent himself — energized. It’s a field that demands creativity without sacrificing precision, where innovation and execution must go hand in hand.

Leadership with Purpose

Brent describes himself as a conscious leader — someone driven to balance what he calls the triangle: the people, the company, and the stakeholders. His leadership style is shaped by early career experiences at Reyco Industries and later Tuthill Corporation, where he gained extensive training in Lean Manufacturing, Radical Leadership, and Conscious Company principles. He brings that same approach to Kraken today, guiding teams with clarity and empathy while maintaining a sharp focus on operational excellence. For Brent, leadership is about creating an environment where team members feel empowered to innovate, execute with precision, and support one another — all while keeping the customer at the center of every decision.

Looking Ahead as Part of Excelis

With Kraken now part of Excelis, Brent sees new opportunities for growth and alignment across the family of brands. “I’m excited about the investment being made to grow both the Excelis and Kraken brands,” he says. “The investment isn’t just in infrastructure — it’s in people. And that’s what drives real progress.” Under his leadership, Kraken continues to stand for what it always has: reliable performance, precise engineering, and a spirit of innovation that keeps customers moving forward.

A Career Built on Experience

Brent’s career path reflects a blend of technical skill, operational knowledge, and leadership development. He started at Reyco Industries in 1995, a company producing heavy-duty truck and trailer suspensions. When Tuthill Corporation acquired Reyco in 1999, Brent continued with the company, eventually being promoted to Operations Manager. During his tenure, he gained extensive hands-on experience in production, supply chain management, and team leadership. Education has also played a key role. Brent earned a diploma in Business Operations Management from Niagara College in Welland, Ontario, where he completed a three-year program focused on practical, real-world business operations.

Beyond the Office

Outside of work, Brent’s life reflects the same balance he brings to his role. He’s a proud father of an 11-year-old daughter and step-parent to a 26-year-old son. He enjoys hockey with his wife in a mixed skill and gender league, tinkering with RC boats, and following his daughter’s passions in soccer and dance. Brent also stays connected to family in both Canada and England, making time for travel whenever he can.

Looking Forward

As Kraken enters this next chapter within the Excelis family, it does so with a leader who understands that innovation thrives on teamwork — and that reliability and precision start with people who care about doing things right. Brent Harman’s vision is clear: to continue building a company that excels in delivering innovative, precise, and dependable automation solutions, while supporting the talented team that makes it all possible.

With him at the helm, Kraken Automation is poised to tackle new challenges, develop cutting-edge solutions, and continue delivering exceptional results for customers — a testament to what happens when experience, leadership, and a culture of collaboration come together.
